To shave or not to shave…

Recently, daycare staff member, Amy, asked me to shave her lovely Labrador, Shiloh, because she was getting some small hotspots around her collar area and under her ears. I’ve already talked about how nasty hotspots can be, and shaving either a generous patch around the infection or the entire dog are good options for combating the problem.

First and foremost, clipping the coat short allows air to get to the hotspot and dry it out, which is the best and fastest way to treat it initially.

There are, however, other benefits to shaving your dog, so if you are sitting on the fence about whether to shave or not, the next few ideas may help you to make up your mind.

Many dog owners that book in with us for de-shedding are unsure whether they want a Strip Out or if they want an ... Click here to read more....

Breed Test: Cairn Terrier

These cute little guys were first bred to flush out vermin and game out of rocky piles in Scotland in the early 1500’s. The Cairn Terrier is actually the oldest of the terrier breeds; it was actually considered the same breed as the Scottish Terriers and West Highland White Terriers until the 1900’s when they started to breed separately.

Cairn Terriers are known for their shaggy, double, weather-resistant coat with a harsh outer coat with a soft undercoat. The Cairn Terrier comes in almost any colour except white, including ;red, brindle, blackish, sand and various shades of grey, often with dark ears, muzzle and tail tip.

Cairn Terriers are quite small dogs and shouldn’t weigh any more then 8kgs, simular to West Highland White Terriers and the Scottish Terrier.

Personality of these little dogs includes Loyal, Alert, Curious Little dogs that also have a ... Click here to read more....

New Apps for Dogs!

‘There’s an app for that!’ Updated version! We did an article on dog apps for iphone/ipad back in September 2011 but a lot of those apps are now outdated or have been replaced and new ones have come in. There are thousands of doggy apps you can download from the apple app store but how do you know which ones are good and which ones are ripping you off or wasting your data downloads? We have tested a few different apps here at Paddington pups and this article will outline a few apps which are easy to use, helpful and inexpensive!

The number one app I would recommend would have to be ‘Paw Club’, this app I have found myself using weekly to find different dog parks and beaches to take my girls! This is an Australian made app for all dog lovers and it’s Free. The pet-friendly ... Click here to read more....

Did You Know?

¨            Dogs have sweat glands in between their paws

¨            The most intelligent dogs are reportedly the Border Collie and the Poodle, while the least intelligent dogs are the Afghan Hound and the Basenji

¨            Male dogs will raise their legs while urinating to aim higher on a tree or lamppost because they want to leave a message that they are tall and intimidating.

¨            Dogs are about as smart as a two- or three-year-old child. This means they can understand about 150-200 words.

¨            It is much easier for dogs to learn spoken commands if they are given in conjunction with hand signals or gestures.

¨            A puppy is born blind, deaf, and toothless.

Dog nose prints are as unique as human finger prints and can be used to identify them

Boredom Busters

Ever wonder what your furry friend is up to when they’re not at daycare or you’re not home? If they’re not sleeping, your best bet is that they’re tearing up your favourite pair of shoes/the couch/cushions, or even chasing their tail. Boredom at home can cause physiological problems, especially if they start entertaining themselves with chasing their tail or
grooming themselves; it can become a habit that
will be hard to break. Giving your pets something to do during the day while you are not home is important and it also stimulates and exercises their brain.

Boredom Busters can include a whole range of different things to keep your dog occupied while you are away! There are specific toys you can buy, toys you can make, food you can freeze or stuff into a toy. You can even hide different food or toys for your dog to search out
when

Saskatoon in Canada bans ‘Yappy Dogs’

A new law has been put in place in Saskatoon that any dog that weighs less than 5 pounds (2.27kg) is to be banned due to their “noisy and annoying” behavior. There is a long list of tiny pocket dogs that are now banned in Saskatoon’s city limits. There is a list of illegal dogs on the website of this article; http://www.thelapine.ca/saskatoon-bans-shitty-little-yappy-dogs

– Bichu Frise
– Shit-Tsu
– Chihuahaa
– Lhaso Apso
– Maltese
– Rat Terrier
– Pug, Pugg, or Pugglet
– Pekinese
– Japanese Chin
– Pomengranate

You may notice that most of these dogs breeds are spelt wrong, the last ‘dog’ is supposed be the ‘Pomeranian’ but the writer has stupidly mistaken it for the fruit. The mayor of this town stated ‘we are not New Yorkers; we have big dogs’ even though he sits at his desk with a stuffed Alsatian ‘guarding’ him.
