At Paddington Pups, we are all dog enthusiasts; therefore we also endure the expensive Vet bills. There can also be the issue of cats, birds, dogs and other little critters having to visit the Vet for monthly check ups and routine vaccinations to hike up the prices on your bill. Although the upfront cost of purchasing a companion can seem expensive, it is the overall bills from feeding and maintaining their health that can become more expensive in the long run.
As dog lovers, we know our pet’s health and safety would always come first. However, during some rough economic times, paying these expensive figures can become a challenge. Below are some helpful hints to help minimise the risk of having to rush your pet to the vet in case of an accident or trauma, in order to save you a few dollars on your annual vet allowance.
Accidents Involving Motor Vehicles
- It is important to maintain strong control when walking your pet near roads, so if you’re using retractable or longer lead, make sure it is tight around moving cars or other vehicles.
- Although it seems easy to leave your dog in the back yard instead of walking near roads, it has been found that self inflicted injuries by dogs are usually associated with boredom and lack of exercise, and can exceed $5,500 in veterinary costs.
- Always ensure your dogs collar is tight enough so they can’t slip out of it and end up running free.
- Secure your dog when travelling in your own motor vehicle by using a travel harness.
Skin Irritations
- Maintain flea and tick problems with Advantix, Capstar, Comfortis and other treatments.
- Use sensitive skin shampoo and conditioner, such as Fido Oatmeal shampoo and conditioner for skin irritations.
- See a vet early on in the course of skin issues, to find preventative measures that will cost less than antibiotics or other treatments.
- Seek advice on special pet foods specifically to help prevent these sorts of issues, such as Science Diet – Sensitive Skin.
Arthritis
- Obesity and overweight issues can often apply a lot of pressure to a dog’s joints and muscles, so it is important to maintain a healthy weight range for your animal.
- Give treats that assist with healthy joints such as Green Lip Mussels and Shark Cartilage which contain important Omega 3 fats and calcium for strong bones, as well as being super-packed with other essential nutrients that benefit your dog at any age.
Bloating
- Make sure you are feeding your pet appropriately according to its breed size and requirements.
- Try to avoid making your dog exercise after eating. Instead, let them rest or lie down.
- If vomiting becomes a regular occurrence, seek advice on special food regarding bloating, such as Science Diet- Sensitive Stomach.
All of these techniques should be applied regularly to avoid constant vet trips for your pets, and to help maintain a healthy and long life.
