It may be hard for some
people to believe but our dogs feel grief when they lose a beloved four legged family member.
This grief may stem from the dependency built up over the years from one dog to the other, the companionship reinforced from being left home alone together regularly, or the lengthy period of time spent in the company of each other. No matter how it happens it is a massive shock when a friend suddenly departs.
A grieving dog may become quiet or persistently wander the house or yard, looking for their lost friend. Other dogs may go off their food or act generally depressed. When this happens it is important to make sure the dog will eat at some point
When grieving, try to keep the routine as close to normal as possible. For instance; by keeping dinner times and walk times the same. It is also important to not jump to the conclusion that your dog needs a new companion.
It is sometimes easy to think your dog is lonely or pining for a companion, often this behaviour is the natural grief process. If we try to force a new member of the family on our older dog it can just cause stress or aggression and more pain than is necessary.
Be sure to keep a close eye on your dog during this difficult time. If you suspect unusual behaviour may have deeper health reasons do not hesitate to get in contact with your local vet, even if this is just to put your mind at ease. More stress and worry in the household only makes the situation worse and makes doggy suffer more.
Like any new situation or change, time to adjust is always best. Give doggy the time to adapt to the new dynamic of the household and family. Try not to push anything that the dog is unhappy with and keep everything else in life generally the same.
Be sure to get in touch with your vet if anything gives you the impression your dog may be deteriorating and keep a close eye on what makes your dog happiest and helps to forget his worries.
