Notes From The Grooming Table This Month: Anal Glands

Many of our customers often see our grooming option of ‘anal glands’ up on our price list and aren’t sure what they are/if your dog needs them done. Anal glands are one of the least known parts of the dogs anatomy as it is a strong difference between humans and canines. They are very common in mammals, including both cats and dogs, and are located both sides in between the internal and external anus muscles.

As dogs have become more domesticated, they no longer use their anal glands to mark their territory and instead use urine. This has been directly linked to the need for dogs to have their anal glands squeezed.

Breed Test: Lhasa Apso

lhasa apso

The Lhasa Apso is a small breed of dog that has been around for many generations, and adapted to be the perfect ‘lap dog’.

Their origin can be traced back to Buddhist monasteries in Tibet, where they would alert the monks of any intruders. According to Monks, Lhasa Apso’s bring good luck, giving them the nickname ‘Lucky Lhasas’.

The breed comes in a variety of colours, including white, black gold and part-coloured. Their beards and ears are normally shaded darker than their body coat.

The Lhasa Apso has carried on many traits since their ancestry, proving to be useful guard dogs with their loud bark. Their ideal temperament is to be wary of unknown people but loyal to those around them.

Although they do require socialisation and introduction to strangers from a young age, they can prove to be valuable pets to have! Lhasa’s can live up to 15 ... Click here to read more....

Life Lessons to Learn From Your Dog

1. If you stare at someone long enough, eventually you’ll get what you want.

2. Don’t go out without ID.

3. Be direct with people; let them know exactly how you feel by pissing on their shoes.

4. Be aware of when to hold your tongue, and when to use it.

5. Leave room in your schedule for a good nap.

6. Always give people a friendly greeting. A cold nose in the crotch is most effective.

7. When you do something wrong, always take responsibility (as soon as you’re dragged shamefully out from under the bed).

8. If it’s not wet and sloppy, it’s not a real kiss.

Are Dogs Mouths Really As Clean We Think?

The phrase that ‘dog’s mouths are cleaner than humans’ is thrown around a lot, but is it really true, or is it just a myth?

This myth can be traced back to dogs licking their own wounds, and the infection rapidly disappearing! This however, is all due to a dog tongues ability to be able to remove dead tissue around the wound. This tends to speed up the healing process on a canine injury or infection. smiling dog

But would we really go as far as to say their mouths are clean enough for us to kiss them on the mouth?! According to veterinarian research, dog’s mouths contain only bacteria and infections specifically related to the breed. This means that although their mouths may carry infections or bacteria, they can only be transmitted to other dogs in the form of infectious diseases! Many studies have been conducted into bacterial colonies in ... Click here to read more....

Human Foods My Dog CAN Eat!

After last month’s article highlighting the dangers of some human foods for dogs, we thought we would follow up with an article featuring human foods that are safe (and healthy!) to feed your dogs.

There are a number of healthy human-grade foods that our dog’s stomachs can process.

dog eati ng carrotAlthough it will become obvious that most of these are all-natural foods, processed, greasy foods cannot be broken down throughout a dogs body. It is important to remember that dogs have completely different bodies to us- they have smaller organs, require less food intake and are not designed to eat processed foods!

But there are some easy things in all of our cupboards and fridges that are more than okay to feed our pets!

Yoghurt is an easy treat for your dogs, as it is a fantastic source of high levels of protein and calcium. It is very important you only ... Click here to read more....

Paddington Pups Dog of the Month – Congratulations Oscar!

2 prints of DOG OF THE MONTH MAY 2012_OSCAR low res (3)

Oscar is our tiny tri-coloured Chihuahua that has joined us in daycare 3 days a week since the beginning of last year, only taking a small break whilst his mum had a beautiful baby!

Although Oscar started out very timid and shy to our team, he quickly came out of his shell, busting with excitement to come in! Oscar quickly established a love affair with our groomer, Lisa, who enjoys cuddling with him during her breaks!

Although Oscar does love finding comfortable beds and having a snooze in daycare, he will often explode with energy in the afternoon, making new friends and playing with a little puppy in the grooming room!

Everyone in the team was very excited to announce Oscar as Dog of the Month, as he has definitely come a long way since his first day!

Congratulations little Oscar, we know you have been waiting for this!!... Click here to read more....
