Pet Ownership in Australia

For years Australia has held the title of having one of the highest incidences of pet ownership in the world.

Ninety one percent of pet owners in Australia state they consider their pets to be integral parts of the family. Eighty three percent of people claim pets were a normal part of their childhood in one way or another. These statistics have been taken by a variety of different organizations and each concludes that Australia is not only one of the biggest pet owning countries in the world; it is also one of the most caring and humane as well.

In 2009, the ACAC, Australian Companion Animal Council, released their newest report on the ‘Contribution of the Pet Care Industry to the Australian Economy’. This report not only discusses the monetary status of pet care in Australia but also states the most accurate and up-to-date figures of pet ownership in the country. The results may be a bit surprising but the overall report was quite promising as to the future of pet owners and pet care in Australia.

The report states that there are an estimated number of thirty-three million pets in an estimated eight million homes in Australia. Thirty-six percent of pet owners own a dog and twenty-three percent own a cat. Both statistics are higher than the UK in which twenty-three percent of pet owners own a dog and twenty percent own a cat. Australia averages sixteen dogs and eleven cats for every one hundred people.

Dogs make up the nearly sixty percent of the $6.02 billion that was spent by pet consumers in 2009. Australian pet owners had an estimated total number of around 3.41 million dogs in 2009. There was a two and a half percent increase in dog food sales and a twelve percent increase in dog treat sales from 2008 to 2009. Nearly half a million dogs were bought in 2009.

The average cost to adopt a dog was between $210 and $325; the average cost to adopt a puppy was between $260 and $350. The report also indicates that more people are using grooming services to have their dogs groomed. An estimated thirty percent of dogs are groomed at least five times a year by various grooming services.

Mobile grooming services are beginning to become popular amongst dog owners. Less than one percent of dogs are walked by a professional service or company. Dog owners are seemingly taking up the mantle of exercising their canine companion themselves.

Pet ownership may not be at its all-time high but Australia pet owners are showing that they truly care for their pets in statistics that are higher than the majority of world. To all who currently own a pet; keep up the good work!
