Holland Becomes the First Country Without Street Dogs

In 2016, Holland became the first country in the world to eradicate dog homelessness. The Dutch people love dogs and approximately 1 in 5 homes own a dog as a pet. But, like many populated countries, Holland was plagued with stray dogs for hundreds of years.

Since implementing an animal welfare program the country has been able to successfully manage the problem by promoting rescue and adoption and legislating the protection, health and welfare of animals.

Through various government programs, policies, campaigns and initiatives, more than a million stray dogs have been adopted by loving families and given a safe place to call home.
