Did you know that it’s safe for dogs to eat summer fruits?
In the heat of the summer, there’s nothing more refreshing than eating a bowl full of delicious summer fruits, and it’s great to know your dog can enjoy them with you!
Summer fruits are nutritious and hydrating and dogs can absorb and digest some of the nutrients from summer fruits, providing them with some great health benefits. As with anything though, it’s important to only feed your dog fruit in moderation. Fruits have a high sugar content and can sometimes cause an upset stomach, and there are some fruits that should be avoided altogether because they can be toxic to dogs, so it’s important to do your research first.
Some of the fruits that are safe to give your dog include:
- Apples – apples are a great source of vitamins A and C as well as fibre – just be sure to remove the seeds before you feed to your dog.
- Oranges – oranges can make a deliciously juicy snack full of vitamin C which helps to boost their immune system – again, be sure to remove the seeds and of course the rind.
- Pears – pears contain plenty of nutrients and vitamins and are great to feed to your dog in small chunks minus the core and seeds.
- Watermelon – watermelon is rich in vitamins and the sweet, juicy pink fruit will help keep your dog hydrated in the heat of the summer. Cut into chunks and remove all of the seeds.
- Pineapple – packed with vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, potassium, magnesium and iron, pineapple chunks can make for a tasty treat for your dog. Make sure all the spiky exterior is removed first.
- Blueberries – full of antioxidants, blueberries can be given as a healthy alternative when rewarding them for good behaviour or when training.
So, the next time you tuck into your fruit salad, try feeding some small amounts of these fruits to your dog and see which ones they enjoy the most!
